Originally from the Midwest, Kate Deak graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a BFA in Visual Communication and an emphasis in illustration. At Washington University she began printmaking and explored its expansive potential as a medium for making art. Since then she spends time traveling by bicycle across different continents, volunteering, collecting artifacts, and drawing her trekking experiences. Currently, Kate lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area and develops these documents from her travels as images via printmaking. She uses dry-point etching, mono-prints, watercolors, and chine-colle to create works on paper. Her mixed media techniques reflect the various layers of her experiences around the world with rich layers of colors, textures, and energetic marks. In addition to being a fine artist, Kate is passionate about art education. She presently teaches drawing, painting, and photography at a high school in San Jose. As a teacher, she is able to combine two of her passions, teaching art and making art.
